Newport High School, Bettws, 1973

Newport High School was originally sited at Queens Hill near the centre of Newport. In 1967 a competition was held for architects to design a new school to be constructed on a large site at Bettws, outside the town. The winning design, from 165 entries, was built in 1972 only to be demolished in 2009 after a new school was built on the site.

Courtyard at eastern end. Grouped around it are the swimming pool, gym, opposite, library, music room and assembly hall. Compact planning of the school (it covers approximately 2.5 acres) puts all facilities within easy reach.
